As a massage therapist and energy worker, I’ve incorporated essential oils into my treatment sessions for years. But recently, I learned the science behind how powerful essential oils really are. Essential Oils are potent, powerful wellness tools in little glass bottles!
I had no idea there are some pretty big differences about quality, purity, and potency. And I personally learned some new ways to use them… All I’ve got to say is, Essential Oils are AH-MAZ-ING!!
Recently, I personally developed a condition called plantar fasciitis. This is a painful condition where the thick band of tissue (plantar fascia) that runs across the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes, gets inflamed. The pain honestly feels like an intense, stabbing pain that is usually the worst when you get out of bed and try to take your first steps in the morning.
As someone who is on her feet most of the time for work, this was NOT GOOD. Of course, I had been doing some recommended rehab exercises, and they helped, as well as crystal therapy, massage, and getting shoes with better support.. but what took the pain away and gave me the most relief almost overnight? Essential oils! Seriously.
But enough about me and my foot for right now… I’ll let you know what happened in a minute.. this post is all about the essential oils!
What are essentials oils, anyway?
Well, you know when you smell a flower, and you can smell its gorgeous fragrance? You are actually smelling the aromatic qualities of that flowers’ essential oils. These concentrated essential oil compounds are found in flowers, herbs, fruits, roots, stems, bark, seeds, and other parts of plants. They don’t just smell good, though. Those aromatic oils are actually part of each plants natural defense against predators and disease. The natural oils in plants also assist in the pollination process. These aromatic essential oils actually contain powerful medicinal properties that we humans can use.
Now don’t go thinking these oils are some new fad or a weird new-agey thing. Did you know essential oils have been around for THOUSANDS of years? You could say they were among the first medicines ever recorded. There are references to oils used for protection, and embalming, in Ancient Egypt, and oils were even found in King Tut’s tomb. References to essential oils for healing work by physicians and in sacred rituals by priests have been found in the ancient texts of China and hieroglyphics of Egypt. The Temple of Isis had a sacred room for ritual cleansing using… you guessed it.. OILS! There are even 188 references to essential oils in the bible, used for holy anointing, and healing the sick.
How do you actually use essential oils?
Essential oils can be used in wellness, in beauty treatments, in food preparation, in household cleaning, and even in room freshening. Their properties work on not only the physical body, but on the emotional body as well. You can use oils singularly, or layered, or even blended.
There are three different application methods: Aromatic, Topical, and Internal. Let’s take a look at HOW to employ the different ways to work with essential oils:
Aromatic application includes inhalation, or diffusing in to the air. Depending on the oil you use, diffusing essential oils can potentially be stimulating, relaxing, calming, or even soothing. Oils diffused into the air can also purify the air of stinky odors and even bacteria! And honestly, diffusing makes your space smell FANTASTIC! A cold air diffuser is essential for this application, as it breaks up the oil into a micro-fine mist that is dispersed into the air. The anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-septic properties of the oils can potentially kill bacterial and help reduce mold and fungus. Diffusers that use heat will alter the chemical composition of the oils and their therapeutic benefits are lost, so they are not recommended, although they will still make your space smell good. Other ways to use aromatic application would include putting a drop or two of essential oil on a handkerchief, tissue, cotton ball, towel, or pillow case… hold it close to your face, and inhale. I’ve been known to even put a cotton ball with a few drops of oils into my vacuum, it freshens the room wonderfully!
Topical application means directly applying oils to the skin. Essential oils are easily absorbed by the skin. Less is more here, as these are powerful oils! Oils can be applied right on to the area of concern, such as where I felt pain on my foot, and on scrapes, burns, etc. Oils can also be applied in massage, or used as perfume or cologne, as a component in a hot or cold compress, in your bath, jacuzzi, or sauna.. added to body lotion, hand soap, or shampoo.. Some people can be sensitive to oils. It is suggested that for infants, small children, and sensitive individuals, the oil be diluted with a carrier oil, so as not to cause an adverse reaction. Some oils are so potent that it is recommended they be diluted for everyone. Remember, these little drops of gorgeous plant essence are POWERFUL.
Internal application means ingesting the oil. The FDA has approved some essential oils as appropriate to take internally. The official designation for such oils is GRAS (generally regarded as safe). Examples of internal application include a drop into your water glass, a drop or two in your salad dressing or cookie recipe, a drop or two in your spaghetti sauce, a drop in your herbal tea… you get the idea. Generally, a drop is all you need. NEVER consume or ingest an essential oil that does not have the GRAS designation. And if your essential oil does not have a supplemental facts label on the bottle, DO NOT ingest.
Are essential oils all the same?
They all come in small little amber, or sometimes even blue, glass bottles or vials, right? Why does the price vary? Aren’t these oils all the same? I mean, they all come from plants, right? Well, yes, they all do come from plants. HOWEVER.. NOT all oils are the same.
Potency and purity are of the most importance when choosing your essential oils. Potency comes from the plant itself. Hopefully that plant was nurtured and grown in proper, sustainable conditions in optimal temperature, soil, and climate. Purity refers to whether the oil contains fillers, synthetic chemicals, or other ingredients, and/or methods to dilute or alter the purity of the oil. You want to look at how the oils were made. Do the oils contain synthetic chemicals? Additives? Were they diluted?
Another thing to consider: Does the company work with the farmers to sustain their existence when crops have been harvested and the growing season is over? Are there fair trade practices in place for the crops, the farmers, and the workers? Important things to consider when purchasing ANY product, but especially when choosing essential oils.
Soooo… what can you actually do with essential oils?
I really love this question. The answer is limitless! Essential oils are truly a powerhouse arsenal for a wellness lifestyle! Essential oils are antimicrobial and some have been scientifically proven to kill bacteria naturally without dangerous side effects. While they powerfully destroy bacteria, they also gently restore balance to the body. Essential oils work on both the physical body, and on the emotional and spiritual bodies as well.
From the different applications described above, there are virtually a limitless number of ways to work with essential oils. Want some ideas? Get in touch!
As for me, and that plantar fasciitis in my foot.. I began applying a blend of different oils, layered, right to the source of pain. Within minutes, I realized the pain was gone. GONE! This pain had become a constant companion for me, and while the rehab exercises helped, I was never without the pain being a constant, nagging companion.
Today, as I write this, I feel no pain at all. Truly a miracle!!
